The ’Sconset Trust strives to preserve the unique character of the east end of Nantucket Island through conservation of areas of open land and preservation of structures of historical and architectural significance in ’Sconset.
The Trust works with the entire island community and collaborates with
conservation and historic preservation groups to achieve its goals.
Conservation
For over 20 years the ’Sconset Trust has been dedicated to protecting open space and keeping it forever wild. Since 1984, through gifts and purchases, the Trust has acquired over 84 acres of land. Overdevelopment is threatening Nantucket, and in ’Sconset alone there are several major parcels of land totaling almost 300 acres that face the threat of high density development. The Trust and its members are committed to helping protect these lands.
Preservation
The ’Sconset Trust currently holds two Historic Preservation Easements: Atlantic House on Main Street and the Siasconset Union Chapel on New Street. By creating a preservation easement, a property owner can protect the property’s historic character for future generations. A preservation easement is the best tool to ensure the long-term integrity of a building as well as its place in the community.
